5 Indoor Garden Tips for Urban Apartment Dwellers

July 28, 2016Health & Wellness

Summer is here and it’s a lot of fun to spend time outdoors. Don’t let a lack of space hold you back from gardening. If you live in the city and have a small apartment, you can still grow plants inside!

Space is always an issue with us, the apartment dwellers. We don’t have a front yard or backyard, we don’t have a garage or basement (unless if you live in a townhouse then you might have a little more space). However, if you are an apartment dweller and serious about gardening, there is still hope.

Here are 5 awesome ideas for indoor gardening.

Planting indoors

You may have untapped potential in your apartment that you can rearrange to come up with awesome indoors gardening designs. Use any extra space in your house to place flower pots; place them on your balcony, window sill, hang them from the ceiling or grow a vertical garden on walls.  You will be able to grow a wide variety of flowering plants, trees, and herbs in less space than you’d think. Below are several indoor planting ideas for maximizing space and benefits.

1. Hanging Garden:

Hanging containers are great space savers, one of the best. There are many creative ways you can create a hanging garden at home. There are creative containers available for hanging plants at your local department store. Use knotted strings or nets to put your plants in. You can also use glass vessels, old pickle jars, soda bottles, cans and other household items for planting. Be creative in your approach. Hanging baskets and hanging shelves are also attractive and space saving planters.

2. Vertical Green Wall:

You may have an old shoe organizer that hangs from your door, which you can use for planting. You can clamp containers on the wall, use hooks, or use pallets for vertical wall gardening. Your limit is the wallspace you have. Empowering, right?

3. Planting Shelves:

Another way of planting indoors is done by building shelves for planting in small spaces. Any old rack or bookshelf can be turned into a planting shelf really. You can build one with boards and blocks, or buy and reuse old shelves. Pick them up, paint them and turn them into planting shelves! Antique and thrift stores are a great place to look first.

4. Tower Garden:

Aquaponic Tower Gardens are a new technology that allows you to grow up to 50 plants in a couple of square foot area by utilizing vertical growing. Tower gardens are awesome because you’ll be able to grow a number of plants with minimum attention and minimal space. It’s fully automatic, uses no soil and its smart design allows you to place it anywhere indoors or outdoors. So you can create an amazing indoor salad garden virtually on autopilot.

5. Use the Steps:

Use your steps. If you have steps going up to your apartment, near the fire exit or indoors, use those steps to place your flower pots on. In case of old fire escape stairs, just make sure that the steps are well lit and your plants have enough airflow for the plants to be healthy. Safety first!
