Love Organic Food? You Can Grow Natural Food at Home!

June 1, 2016Health & Wellness

Many of us have become increasingly aware of the benefits of eating organic, natural foods. Not only can they help us to look better by keeping our weight in check, they can help us to feel better on a number of basic levels. The fact of the matter is, when you grow your own food, you really have the benefit of knowing where your food is coming from and exactly what you are putting on the table. That isn’t even to mention the fact that you save a lot of money by growing your own food!

Where to Grow Food?

cabbageOf course, not everybody who wants to grow natural food at home is going to have the same situation. For some people, it is a matter of going out in the backyard, digging up a little plot of land and planting a garden. For others, it is a matter of looking for any nook and cranny they can find in their apartment or small home to grow something that will benefit their family.

What might come as a surprise to you is that the core principles of growing organic food outside and growing it in your home are not all that different. In order to grow any type of natural food, you need the basics. The food needs a source of light that will act as food for it, it needs the right amount of water and it needs a medium in which to grow. If you are planting your plants outside, you are likely to use dirt but inside, you can use organic potting soil, dirt from outside or at times, there may even be other options available.

What will your plants need?

Besides space, there is something else that plants will need in order to thrive and to provide you with food for your table. Your plants are going to need your time and attention. It is not simply enough for you to throw a few plants in the ground and then to come back a month or two later to harvest the crop. Yes, there will be some food available at that time but nothing compared to what will be available if you tend to the plants on a regular basis.

How many plants can you grow?

peppersHow many plants you grow depends upon you, your desires and your needs. Many people find that they have plenty of food available for their tables with just a few plants of different varieties, such as tomatoes, peppers and zucchini. You can even plant something interesting for the table, like a watermelon! Truly, there are no limitations, other than what can be grown in your area and your own personal tastes.

Conclusion:

Many of us simply go to the grocery store when we need some food. It can be convenient to do so, but there is something that has been lost because people tend to buy their food rather than grow it. When you grow your own food, you are not only providing something delicious and nutritious for the table, you are honoring past generations, who depended on their gardens for their lives.
