5 Tips to Make 2021 Your Most Sustainable Year Yet

December 18, 2020Health & Wellness

With 2021 just around the corner, many people will be creating New Year’s resolutions. For some, it might be getting fit and healthy – others might be focusing on reducing their impact on the planet.

If you’re concerned about the impact your lifestyle is having on the environment, fear not – this post will give you all the tips you need to make 2021 your most sustainable year yet.

With that being said, let’s get started.

Tip 1: Ditch Plastic Products

Whilst plastic was once seen as a utopian material, we’re only now seeing the devastating impact it’s actually having on the environment.

Some of the problems associated with plastic include the immense amount of energy needed for its creation, harmful microplastics damaging marine life and the fact that it takes hundreds of years to decompose.

Some items you should consider switching to include goBambu’s bamboo toothbrushes, bars of soaps and shampoo, and reusable carrier bags.

Tip 2: Switch to Clean Energy

All the major energy providers are massive polluters as the majority of their energy is supplied through natural gases and fossil fuels.

Switching to a green energy supplier means your energy will be coming from sustainable, renewable energy.

Tip 3: Cut Down On Meat

The meat industry is one of the most unfriendly to our environment. It’s estimated that over 10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions are caused by the meat industry.

Whilst this doesn’t mean you have to cut out meat from your diet entirely, it does mean that there’s a good opportunity for you to reduce your impact on the environment by consuming less.

Tip 4: Choose Slow Fashion

Another industry which heavily contributes to greenhouse gas emissions is the fashion industry.

This might come as a surprise to some but the advent of fast-fashion means resources are being used and ultimately wasted at a relentless pace.

Creating most fabrics is an energy intestinal process and with retailers constantly trying to keep up with new trends, seasonal wardrobe changes have become the norm.

This has a detrimental effect on the environment however as many of the clothes produced never actually get bought. Retailers often choose to discard or incinerate unsold stock not to devalue the current items they have available.

In 2021, focus more on looking after your current wardrobe without purchasing items just because they are ‘on trend’. There are many platforms popping up online where you can purchase barely worn second hand clothing, contributing to a more circular economy.

Tip 5: Don’t Beat Yourself Up

Trying to change everything in your lifestyle to live more sustainably is very challenging. We’re so accustomed to consumerism and consumption and that makes it difficult to make drastic changes. After all, old habits die hard.

By not beating yourself up you’re far more likely to stay committed if you start losing track of what you’re trying to achieve.

So there we have it – 5 tips to help you make the most of your sustainability goals heading into 2021 and beyond.
