These Common Drugs are Linked to an Increased Risk of Dementia in Seniors!

April 25, 2016Uncategorized

As people get older, they tend to rely on medications to help them live life comfortably. However, many of these medications could be increasing a person’s chance of getting dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

According to this study, the culprits are a group of drugs called anticholinergics and prolonged use of these medications drastically changes the brain and nervous system in a way that dementia thrives. It does this by working with and changing the nervous system to control common issues like respiratory, urinary, and gastrointestinal problems.

Some of these medications include, Benadryl, Dimetapp, Gravol, Unisom, Paxil, and Zyprexa. For a full list of medications on the list, check out this brochure.

Shannon Risacher, an assistant professor of radiology and imaging at the Indiana University School of Medicine states:

“Older adults who might be at risk of dementia, or who feel their memory has started to change might want to go see their doctors if they are on these medications.”

It is important to understand that taking anticholinergic drugs is not necessary. There are plenty of alternatives available that are not linked to dementia or alzheimer’s. There are also natural remedies available like therapy and change in diet.

If you, or a loved one are taking any of these medications, speak to your health care professional to see what alternatives are available for you!
