What to do if You Fall Out with Your Neighbor

June 10, 2019Health & Wellness

How well do you know your neighbor? Do you get on? In an ideal world we’d all get on with each other, but unfortunately, that’s not the case. Many people are very good friends with their neighbors, inviting them to summer BBQs and generally being on good terms. However, there are also plenty of cases where neighbors rarely speak. It’s generally agreed that being respectful of your neighbors and at the very least being civil to each other is important, but what happens when it’s not the case?

There are several reasons why you might fall out with your neighbors. It could be a dispute over a boundary fence; they could be tampering with your property, keeping you awake at night with loud music, or have dogs that keep barking. Luckily, there are things you can do to alleviate such problems and make the neighborhood a better place for everyone.

Try to Resolve Your Differences Over a Cup of Coffee

discussion The best way to try to deal with a neighborly dispute is to discuss it face-to-face. A simple chat over the fence or a visit could be all that’s needed. They may not be aware that their beloved Fido is disturbing your peace with his constant barking. Explaining that you have to get up for work early in the morning and need a good night’s sleep might persuade them to turn their music down earlier in the evening.

It’s possible to clear up any misunderstandings by just having a conversation with your neighbor. You have to continue to live next door to each other, and a legal dispute might not be the best course of action.

There are, however, instances when there is no other option, and you need to seek the advice of a professional.

Dispute Resolution

Getting in touch with a local solicitor is sometimes the only answer. A reputable solicitor doesn’t just deal with a defended divorce. They can also help with neighbor disputes by offering a dispute resolution service. Depending on where you live, there may be laws that cover issues such as banned dog breeds, home additions, parking, and untidy gardens. However, when you’ve exhausted all other options, consulting a solicitor to help resolve your dispute may be the only answer.

The cost of falling out with your neighbors can be considerable, so it’s always worth taking steps to stay on good terms. When you’re looking for somewhere to live, this is the perfect opportunity to check out the neighbors. Look at the houses around a property to see if they look well cared for. View property at the weekend so you can get a good feel for the area. Introduce yourself to the neighbors if you’re thinking of putting in an offer.

If you’ve already moved in, it’s important you take any complaints directly to them in the first instance. Tackle any issues early and take emotion out of the equation by being calm and reasonable. Outline the problem and suggest a suitable compromise for you both.
